These can be switched on and off depending on the user's preference. One memory bank can be assigned to air traffic control, another can be for local marine communications, and yet another for local police frequencies. Many recent models will allow scanning of the specific DCS or CTCSS code used on a specific frequency should it have multiple users. Features Ī Uniden BCT-15 base trunktracking scanner An early 1976 US entry was the Tennelec MCP-1, sold at the January 1976 Consumer Electronics Show in Chicago. The first scanners often had between four and ten channels and required the purchase of a separate crystal for each frequency received. Scanners first became popular and widely available during the heyday of CB radio in the 1970s. The scanner will stop on an active frequency strong enough to break the radio's squelch setting and resume scanning other frequencies when that activity ceases. A scanning radio will sequentially monitor multiple programmed channels, or search between user defined frequency limits. With a radio fixed on a single frequency, much time could pass between transmissions, while other frequencies might be active. Non-broadcast radio systems, such as those used by public safety agencies, do not transmit continuously. ![]() Scanners developed from earlier tunable and fixed-frequency radios that received one frequency at a time. Radio scanning serves an important role in the fields of journalism and crime investigation, as well as a hobby for many people around the world. Scanners are often used to monitor police, fire and emergency medical services. Both hand held and desktop models are available. Recent models can follow trunked radio systems and decode APCO-P25 digital transmissions. Today, modern microprocessors have enabled scanners to store thousands of channels and monitor hundreds of channels per second. Early scanners were slow, bulky, and expensive. More often than not, these scanners can also tune to different types of modulation as well ( AM, FM, WFM, etc.). The term scanner generally refers to a communications receiver that is primarily intended for monitoring VHF and UHF landmobile radio systems, as opposed to, for instance, a receiver used to monitor international shortwave transmissions. A scanner (also referred to as a radio scanner) is a radio receiver that can automatically tune, or scan, two or more discrete frequencies, stopping when it finds a signal on one of them and then continuing to scan other frequencies when the initial transmission ceases.

What is macOS Catalina?Ĭatalina is the operating system from Apple that succeeds macOS Mojave. ![]() ![]() The Chromium Multi-process ModelĮlectron inherits Chromium’s multi-process model - the main application as well as every Slack team that you’re signed into live in a separate process with its own memory space. Our app has migrated from a CoffeeScript application written with vanilla DOM APIs to a modern ES6 + async/await React application, and we’re currently incrementally moving our app to TypeScript. Technology Stackĭespite being the first production Electron application outside of Atom, the Slack Desktop application has been kept fairly up-to-date with regards to web technologies. So, when we looked into how to modernize the Mac app, moving to a unified codebase across Mac, Windows, and Linux was an easy choice. It was useful for us to be able to share our app with coworkers using macOS, for things like design feedback. Since very early in the development of the Slack Electron app, we’ve had a working macOS version (albeit with many missing features). We’ve written about Electron before, but to summarize, Electron is a platform that combines the rendering engine from Chromium and the Node.js runtime and module system. Separately, when we created the Slack Windows application, we couldn’t use the existing codebase, so we decided to bet on a brand new platform called Electron. Furthermore, WebView was tied to the operating system’s version of Safari, meaning that we didn’t have many options when older versions of macOS had an issue in Safari that affected our app. New features such as HTTP/2 are only coming to Apple’s new WKWebView view, and moving to this would effectively require a complete rewrite of the application. While that served us well for a long time (including the retrofitting of multiple-team support), this architecture was starting to show its age. Originally, the Slack desktop application was written using the MacGap v1 framework, which internally used WebView to host web content inside of a native app frame. Since there isn’t much information out there about how to do this with Electron, we wanted to dive into a bit more detail about how our hybrid application works. Unlike a 100% in-box approach that some other apps take, Slack takes a hybrid approach where we ship some of the assets as part of the app, but most of the assets and code are loaded remotely. There are, of course, different ways to build desktop applications with web technologies. We built it with Electron, and, as a result, it’s faster, sports a frameless look, and has a number of behind-the-scenes improvements to make for a much better Slack experience. Today we’ve just shipped a new version of the Slack Desktop application for macOS. ![]() To distinguish it, these items will have this notice. Octavia Butler’s novel is an impressive, prophetic work of art that has only become more prescient in the decades since its publication. Audience members needed to read the novel beforehand to be able to fully appreciate the care and genius the creators imbued in this performance. The opera, to put it simply, was not a mere adaptation but a complex artistic reimagining and should have been treated as such. Additionally, some of the precocious inner thoughts of Lauren Olamina that complicate her personality were missing from the stage performance, and so was her unsettling relationship with Taylor Bankole (Toussaint Jeanlouis), which defines the second half of the novel. Only a handful of the characters onstage were explicitly named, and nearly everyone in the cast plays two characters. For those unfamiliar with Octavia Butler’s “Parable of the Sower,” the plot and characters of this operatic adaptation might have seemed opaque and confusing. With a two hour run time with no intermission and a relentless oeuvre of stunning music, the show might have proven overwhelming to the uninitiated viewer. ![]() The show stared unflinchingly at Butler’s imagined future’s modern-day doppelganger and demanded: What are we going to do? The presence of the creator onstage, flanked by “The Talents” - two figures of Reagon’s own creation fashioned in the image of African goddesses - was a powerful statement of ownership over Butler’s story and the critique it makes of American society. Toshi Reagon - co-creator, co-composer, co-librettist, and musical director - sat in center stage on an elevated platform for the duration of the performance, contributing vocals and guitar, as well as occasionally interjecting to pay special homage to Butler’s original text and to bring “Parable of the Sower” into the context of 2022. The show, in keeping with the book’s purpose, was intensely political and conscious of the present moment. “When the world’s on fire, what you gon’ do?” asked one of the early musical numbers. Desperate outsiders ripped down the wall halfway through the show, appropriately signifying a major turning point: The erosion of artificial class barriers, ordered society, and Lauren’s security. On the metaphorical level, the wall represented how little actually separates those on the inside (the haves) from those on the outside (the have-nots). A thin, gossamer curtain hangs over the scene, evoking the wall surrounding Lauren’s insular community and its fragility. The set design, too, deftly complemented the narrative. And crucially for a show with little dialogue, Tatti and the rest of the cast effectively utilized body language and space to portray both Lauren’s unusual condition - she was afflicted with “hyperempathy,” a syndrome that causes victims to literally feel other peoples’ pain - and the broader dynamics of a community on the verge of collapse. Sims and The Ancestor, filled the space with her stunning, clear vocals. ![]() Marie Tatti performed a forceful yet still youthful Lauren, and her soaring voice managed to convey prayer, anguish, passion, and confusion in equal turn. While Toshi Reagon and Bernice Johnson Reagon’s music and lyrics expertly reimagined Butler’s story, it is the actors’ passionate portrayals of the characters and superb musical talent that made the opera so immersive and emotional. The entire opera drew heavily on traditionally Black musical genres, including blues, jazz, and folk music, breathing life into a rich story populated by complex Black characters. God is Change,” were performed in a dynamic gospel musical style in the stage adaptation. Aptly, the powerful proclamations of “Earthseed,” “All that you touch, you Change. One of the show’s main plotlines revolves around “Earthseed,” a religion invented by the main character Lauren Olamina (Marie Tatti) after she realized that the god of her father, Reverend Olamina (Jared Wayne Gladly), was not sufficient to carry her through the end of the world as she knows it. In light of this, “Parable of the Sower,” a reimagining of Butler’s masterpiece as a gospel-opera, written by Toshi Reagon and Bernice Johnson Reagon and performed at the Emerson Cutler Majestic Theatre, sent a timely message of resistance and faith against a backdrop of a not-so-distant apocalypse. In 2022, Butler’s vision is eerily, terrifyingly prophetic. A demagogue would rise to power touting “Christian values” and the slogan “make America great again.” Civil society would erode into chaos and violence in the streets of major U.S. In 1993, Octavia Butler imagined the year 2024: There would be intense, apocalyptic climate change leading to the exploitation of workers, a massive refugee crisis, and major violent class disparities. There will also be some changes to it in certain places as well. We can also see that there have been some additions to the story so far. It's good to be back! Let's see where this goes! We got a lot of power to work with here in UE4, so I want to take full advantage of it and make the world much more interesting to travel through. Most sections of the game were a screen or two, and that was it. That is what's happening right now though! The original HoV was obviously a 2D side scroller, so the translation into 3D will have to mean expanding the environments. You never know what I might come up with! So paying attention to the world around us might keep us from getting ground up in a set of gears, or impaled by floor spikes. Puzzles will of course still be present and scattered throughout the game. Monsters hit hard, and if we get grabbed it would be beneficial to be traveling with a sharp bit of wood, or perhaps something heavy and blunt so we can stab or clobber our way out of their grasp and live to see another day. Which means resource management!Ī part of those resources, besides health and stamina recovery items, and key items, will be single use defensive items! Of course we won't be shooting up any monsters in classic RE fashion here. I've always felt the RE brand set the bar for quality when it comes to gameplay, so I couldn't resist following their lead. I believe having these changes will help to form a more convincing storyline, and also a more cohesive one for a sequel later on.Īnother thing to note is the game is still drawing heavy inspiration from Resident Evil! I decided to tinker with Mary’s recipe, I hope she forgives me and as I remember that the base of these classic biscuits is similar to Brandy Snaps and as I had some stem ginger in the fridge, (and because I am a ginger fiend) I added some ground ginger and some chopped stem ginger to my recipe, and used 55% dark chocolate for the chocolate coating too. BUT, the basic science of the recipe remains the same, with one other exception, I had no Demerara sugar, so I used soft brown sugar instead – but with great results as you can see from my photos. I think that in all baking projects the secret to better results is the preparation, such as the weighing and measuring of ingredients (something the contestants DON’T have to do) and lining baking trays and suchlike. This took me a good fifteen minutes, and I also like to have a big washing up bowl of hot, soapy water to hand, for sticky hands as well as regular washing up of all the bowls and pans used along the way….I am not a fan of adding my baking tools and tins to the dishwasher, especially as some of them are vintage and belonged to my mum or grandmothers.
